Rumors of an impending act of violence at Riverhead High School today were unfounded, principal Charles Regan assured parents in a recorded phone call this afternoon.

After learning of the “rumor being spread around the school and community,” officials conducted an investigation, interviewing students and checking social media, Regan said.

“There was no credible evidence of a threat against the high school,” he said.

“As a precaution, Riverhead police were called and asked that they remain on campus for the latter part of the day,” Regan said in the recorded message.

Schools Superintendent Nancy Carney thanked the Riverhead police for their presence at the school today.

“We appreciate their support,” she said.
