(Updated: 4:45 p.m.) A 63-year old man was accidentally shot in the leg on the skeet and trap field at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Calverton at about 10:19 this morning, Riverhead Police said.  An 82-year-old man was attempting to unload  his gun in the hunting blind when it discharged and struck the victim in the lower leg, according to Riverhead Town Police.

The man was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in stable condition.

Both the victim and the identified shooter at the scene are long time members of the Peconic River Sportsman Club, police said. The victim’s injury is not believed to be life threatening, according to police.

Manorville Fire Department secured the helicopter landing zone. Riverhead Police and a NY State DEC Environmental Conservation officer responded.

Editor’s note: This article has been amended to reflect additional information provided by police after it was originally published, including a correction about how the accident happened. The other man was attempting to unload his gun — not cleaning it — when it accidentally discharged.
