Cadets in Riverhead High School’s NJROTC unit brought home five trophies from the first regional drill competition of the school year.

Hosted in Bethel, Connecticut, the drill meet was the largest in recent memory, with more than 800 students and 19 schools participating.

Riverhead’s first-year cadets particularly distinguished themselves, earning several trophies during their first-ever regional meet. First-place honors were given to both the first-year platoon, led by Jacob Nitti, and first-year academic team, led by Jacob Gilmartin.

The unit’s armed and unarmed platoons also took home second and third place trophies respectively. Riverhead’s armed platoon was led by Nicholas Waldron and the unit’s unarmed platoon was led by Dakota Ventresca.

“Considering the size and scope of this drill competition, it was a great job by all our competitors and set the proper tone for future drill meets,” Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy, Riverhead NJROTC instructor, wrote in a press release today.

Riverhead cadets are now busy preparing for their next drill meet at Mattituck High School on December 19, as well as their annual review, which will be held in the high school gym on December 10.
