Riverhead Community Blood drive at fire department headquarters March 1

The Riverhead Fire Department will host a community blood drive tomorrow afternoon at its Roanoke Avenue headquarters.

Blood supplies have a limited shelf life and are in constant need of replenishment, with about 4.5 million Americans receiving blood transfusions every year, according to the New York Blood Center. In fact, nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone, according to a September press release from the NYBC.

The blood drive will run from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Riverhead Fire House, 540 Roanoke Ave, Riverhead.

People ages 16 to 75, who weigh at least 110 pounds and have not received any tattoos in the past 12 months are eligible to donate. Bring a valid photo or signature ID and be sure to eat well and drink plenty of fluids before donating.
