Two Riverhead students won big at the Greater New York Automobile Dealer’s Association regional competition last week in Whitestone.

Trevor Froelich and Dean Argenti, students at Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at HB Ward Technical Center, were awarded first place at the competition, which features the best high school automotive education students in the region.

Students in teams of two race against the clock to test their skill and knowledge, competing for the title of The Nation’s Best Automotive Technician.

The students will go on to compete at the state-level GNYADA competition in February. If they win, they will move on to nationals for a shot at the title.

As a result of their regional win, Froelich and Argenti were offered scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $12,000 from Lincoln Tech, New England Institute of Tech, Ohio Tech and the GNYADA Auto Training Center. According to the competition’s website, more than $3 million in prizes and scholarships are awarded to participating students and schools each year.
