Applications for Riverhead Charter School’s 2014-2015 school year exceed available seats. Tonight, Tuesday, April 22, the Riverhead Charter School will be holding its annual Charter School lottery.
Although the school has been a lottery school since opening in 2001, the last two years, interest in enrollment has increased significantly. This year marks the highest number of student applications in the history of the school.
The Riverhead Charter School is a public school, with no tuition, serving families of kindergarten through eighth grade students on Eastern Long Island. The school offers a private school environment in a public school setting, currently serving students from local school districts.
The school offers a longer school day with a focus toward more individualized instruction. Enrichment programs are provided for students needing a more challenging academic program. In addition, approximately 11 percent of the students enrolled in the school are identified as students with a disability and 21 percent are identified as English Language Learners.
“Long Islanders are embracing the fact that they have choice in where they can educate their students, with parents exercising school choice in droves, it is only a matter of time before more charter schools come to Long Island”, said Mr. Ankrum.
The lottery will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Riverhead Free Library located at 330 Court Street, Riverhead New York.
