Founding member of legendary bands, Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen is set to perform his Grammy-Nominated blend of finger-picking blues, folk, and ragtime guitar at the historic Suffolk Theater on March 30.

Perhaps the nation’s leading interpreter of traditional blues and roots music, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Kaukonen, has been recognized as one of the most influential guitarist of his generation. With Jefferson Airplane, Jorma’s artistry could be heard on songs including “Somebody to Love”,“White Rabbit” and “Embryonic Journey”. His unique and timeless finger-style guitar blossomed even more fully with his band Hot Tuna, in which he performed arrangements of traditional and original blues and folk. And in 2003, Jorma was nominated for a Grammy for his album “Blue Country Heart”, which featured respected roots artists such as Jerry Douglas and Bela Flek.

Kaukonen is considered by many to be a lynchpin of one of the greatest generations of modern music. In the early 1960’s, Jorma Kaukonen moved from Washington D.C to San Francisco, where he met artists Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin, who would become friends and collaborators. Jorma and Joplin shared a love of early American blues and their Bay Area collaborations have been immortalized on the legendary “Typewriter Tapes” where Janis and Jorma are heard playing simple and sparse blues tunes accompanied by the sound of a typewriter working in the background.

Today, Jorma continues to spread his music by recording, producing, and very importantly, teaching with a host of great guitarists and performers at Ohio’s “Fur Peace Ranch”.Jorma calls Fur Peace Ranch “a ranch that grows guitar players”. Not a fantasy camp, but a place where both budding and seasoned musicians immerse themselves for several days, and emerge with renewed inspiration and tangible progress in their music. Fur Peace attracts highly recognizable teachers beyond Kaukonen and his Hot Tuna partner, bassist Jack Cassidy, but also highly-acclaimed artists such as GE Smith, Country Joe McDonald, Jill Sobule, Tommy Emmanuel, and Frank Vignola.

Jorma will perform at The Suffolk Theater, 118 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY at 7.30 PM on Sunday, March 30.
