Jewelry, beadwork, regalia, painting, sculpture and photography from artists in the Unchechaug, Shinnecock, Montaukett and Taíno * tribal nations as well as performances of traditional and ceremonial song and blessing are all part of an educational exhibit by The Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity & Human Understanding, Inc. in partnership with the Unkechaug Nation Community Development Corporation at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus.

The program and exhibit was developed to educate Long Islanders about local Native American culture and history, said Steven Schrier, Executive Director of the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding.

Speakers will include Dr. John Strong, an author and retired Southampton College professor, and Denise Sheppard, an author who will speak about her Montaukett tribe.

The event will run from March 11 through March 22 at Montaukett Learning Resource Center, Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus. Reception opens 5 p.m. and the program runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

*The Taíno tribe is not native to Long Island; the exhibiting artist is a Long Islander.
