There’s a five-way race for three open seats on the Riverhead Board of Education this year.
Board vice president Greg Meyer and member Kim Ligon have both filed nominating petitions seeking re-election to a three-year term on the Riverhead Board of Education. Board president Ann Cotten-DeGrasse is not seeking re-election.
Also filing nominating petitions for a spot on the ballot were former school board member Lori Hulse, of Riverhead; Laurie Downs, of Riverhead, and Greg Fischer, of Calverton.
Downs, a regular at Riverhead school board meetings for many years, calls herself a “watchdog” and records every public board meeting for broadcast on the Riverhead’s government access channel on Optimum cable TV.
Fischer, a self-employed consultant, has mounted unsuccessful campaigns for state senate, town supervisor and town assessor.
Hulse, an attorney, was first elected to the Riverhead Board of Education in 2000, and served as board president from 2002-2006.
Meyer, a firefighter at Brookhaven National Lab, seeks his third term of office as a school district trustee.
Ligon, first elected in 2011, is seeking a second term on the board. She is a recreation therapist at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
The school district election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, the same day as the school budget vote. Click here for proposed budget details.
