Quick action by witnesses to a hit-and-run crash helped police apprehend the driver of a dump truck that slammed into a minivan on Northville Turnpike and then fled the scene, police said.
Witnesses called 9-1-1 as they pursued the dump truck after the accident in front of First Baptist Church of Riverhead, police said.
Police caught up with the truck northbound on County Route 105. The driver of the dump truck was placed under arrest, police said.
The dump truck rear-ended a northbound Honda minivan shortly after 3 p.m., according to witnesses. The minivan careened into a hedge on the church property, where it came to a stop.
The driver of the minivan was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. No further information as available regarding her condition.
The driver of the dump truck was taken into custody and brought to police headquarters, police said.
Police were waiting for an interpreter to arrive at headquarters to interview the Spanish-speaking driver, according to a desk officer on duty Sunday afternoon. Police had not yet ascertained his identity or place of residence, he said.
It was not immediately known what charges were or will be brought against the driver of the dump truck.
