(Updated 8:05 p.m.) Middle Country Road was reopened as of 8 p.m.

One person was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center and a second was transported there by ambulance following a collision on Middle Country Road in Calverton Friday.

A westbound truck was waiting to make a left turn on Middle Country Road east of Fresh Pond Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. and was rear-ended by a westbound pickup truck.

The male driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with serious injuries, after extrication from the vehicle by Riverhead Fire Department heavy rescue crew. He was conscious and alert and his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

His female passenger was transported to Stony Brook by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the box truck was uninjured.

Police did not immediately identify either victim.

Middle Country Road was shut down in both directions between Edwards and Fresh Pond avenues. It remained closed as of 6:30 p.m., while police investigated and cleared the roadway.
