Sound Avenue is closed westbound between Herricks and Manor lanes this afternoon because police, emergency and utility company personnel are working to remove a utility pole that was snapped in two by a car.

Frederico Colon, age and address unavailable, fell asleep at the wheel of his Nissan Maxima as he traveled westbound on Sound Aveue, Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said. His car left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole. The pole broke in two and the top portion of it came down on the car, crashing through the windshield. Miraculously, the man escaped serious injury, Hegermiller said. Colon was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Police were called on the crash at 1:51 p.m., the chief said.

Eastbound truck traffic is being detoured down Manor Lane due to low-hanging wires.
