A Wading River man was arraigned this morning in Riverhead Justice Court on felony surveillance charges stemming from his alleged illegal use of a video camera to record images of the woman he used to live with.
Curran Kirchner, 32, used an imaging device to record the 29-year-old woman undressing and dressing without her knowledge or consent, for purposes of his own “sexual arousal or gratification,” according to charges read aloud in court by Justice Allen M. Smith. The recording took place last summer at the 16th Street home he previously shared with the woman, according to the charges.
Prosecutors told the court more charges against Kirchner are likely, because video recordings recovered by investigators showed the defendant performing a sexual act upon a “person who appeared to be limp and motionless.” There may be other victims involved, the assistant district attorney said.
The court issued a full stay-away order of protection barring the defendant from any kind of contact with the victim, whose identity was not disclosed.
Kirchner, who told the court he has lived at his current address since October 2011 and has worked as a two-way radio technician at Integrated Wireless Technologies for about a year, was remanded to the Suffolk County jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail. He is due back in court tomorrow.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
