2013 0604 car fire

A young Ronkonkoma couple escaped injury as their vehicle caught fire Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Route 58 and Tanger Mall Drive.

The couple was westbound on Route 58 in their maroon Hyundai Sonata waiting to make a left hand turn onto Tanger Mall Drive when they noticed smoke coming from the vehicle, according to the male passenger. He said there were flames coming out from under the front of vehicle when they exited the car. Neither the driver nor the passenger were injured.

Police quickly arrived on scene and knocked down the flames with a fire extinguisher. Riverhead Fire Department responded with one truck and ensured that the fire was out. Firefighters also helped to push the car out of the middle of the road.
