2013 1111 tanger gas leak

A block of stores at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead was briefly evacuated this afternoon due to a gas leak.

Riverhead Police ordered the evacuation of suits 600 through 607 in Tanger I at about 12:15 p.m. today.

A mechanical failure on a gas valve caused the leak, Riverhead Fire Marshal Dave Andruskiewicz said at the scene.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to the call about an odor of gas at the busy outlet center and determined there was a leak behind the Eddie Bauer store, suite 602A.

National Grid was called to the outlet mall to shut the gas supply down. Within the hour, employees and shoppers were allowed back inside all the stores except the Eddie Bauer outlet, which remained closed while workers replaced the valve.
