2013 1127 truck fire

An tractor-trailer parked in the rear of the Federal Express parking lot on Edwards Avenue erupted into flames this afternoon.

“The cab of the tractor-trailer was fully involved when we arrived,” Riverhead First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said. “The first eye witness told police there were flames coming out of the front grill” on the 18-wheeler’s cab, Brooks said.

The owner of the truck, which was parked in the southwest corner of the FedEx parking lot, told police he hadn’t started its engine since Monday, Brooks said.

Riverhead firefighters responded to the alarm at 1:40 p.m. with three engines. No one was injured in the incident.

The Riverhead fire marshal is investigating the fire.
