2013 0908 fire

Riverhead firefighters put out a suspicious fire at a vacant home on Segal Avenue early Sunday morning.

A couch inside the first-floor living room was on fire and had burned through the floor, Riverhead First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said.

Police officers who responded to the initial call thought they heard movement inside the smoke-filled ranch-style home, Brooks said. RFD deployed search teams inside the dwelling but found no one inside.

About 65 Riverhead firefighters responded to the 6:46 a.m. alarm, along mutual aid from a rapid intervention team from Flanders Fire Department and a Jamesport Fire Department truck that stood by at Riverhead Fire Department headquarters, Brooks said.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down by 7:01 a.m., according to scanner reports.

The record owners of the home at 70 Segal Avenue are Monroe and Mary Lou James, according to town records.

Police and firefighters reported no injuries in the incident.

The Riverhead Fire Marshal is investigating the fire; the Suffolk County Arson Squad has been called for assistance.
