2014 0413 assault

Riverhead police are looking for the men who severely beat and robbed a 33-year-old Hispanic man on the railroad tracks in Riverhead this afternoon.

The victim, whom police described as undomiciled, was discovered shortly before 1 p.m. lying on the ground on the side of the BP gas station on West Main Street, just west of Marcy Avenue, according to a police press release. He was bleeding heavily from the face and head and appeared to be the victim of an assault, police said. He was treated at the scene and then brought by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital, due to the seriousness of his injuries, police said. He was admitted to the hospital’s critical care unit with a fractured skull and possible internal injuries, according to police.

The man later described his attackers as two or three black males, who he said repeatedly beat him about the face with an unknown object, possibly a tree branch, according to the release. He said he had been robbed of approximately $400 cash. An initial investigation revealed the victim was attacked on the railroad tracks directly behind the L.I. Ice and Fuel plant, police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information regarding the investigation is asked to call Riverhead police at 631-727-4500 ext. 332.
