Phillips Avenue Elementary School teacher Lonnie Hughes is in good condition and being well cared for at Stony Brook University Hospital, his family said in a statement issued this afternoon by the hospital.

Hughes collapsed in the Riverhead High School gym Friday night during the Crazy Sports Night competition. EMTs in the stands rushed to his aid and used a cardiac defribrillator to revive the 57-year-old teacher. See prior story.

The hospital this afternoon released the following statement from his family:

“We would like to thank those in the Riverhead community for their concerns, prayers and thoughts, while Lonnie is being cared for at Stony Brook University Hospital.

He is currently in good condition and being cared for by a great team of doctors and nurses at the Stony Brook University Heart Institute. Out of concern for Lonnie’s well-being, we ask that you respect his and our family’s privacy as we focus our attention on helping him make a full recovery.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to James Nizza, Fire Chief at the Westhampton Air National Guard base, the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the EMTs who sprang into action and revived Lonnie at Riverhead High School. We will reach out to them personally at the appropriate time.”
