WASHINGTON -- Congressman Tim Bishop has been named the 2011 recipient of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities’ (NAICU) Award for Advocacy of Independent Higher Education. As the recipient of the 18th Annual NAICU Advocacy Award, Bishop joins a distinguished group of political leaders and advocates including former Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, and Thomas H. Kean, former President of Drew University and former Governor of New Jersey.
In part, Congressman Bishop’s award citation reads: “In presenting this award, NAICU is especially appreciative of Rep. Bishop’s continued respect for our sector’s autonomy and public purpose. We salute his willingness to listen to our concerns, and to act on those concerns when he agrees with them. Just as important is his reasoned directness when he doesn’t agree with our issues. Such open, honest and candid dialogue is yet another reason we honor him with his award, and look forward to many more years of work together on behalf of our nation, our colleges, and our students.”
“Much of my life’s work has been helping students gain access to higher education and graduate with the tools to succeed in life,” said Congressman Bishop, who serves on the House Subcommittee on Higher Education. “NAICU has always been a partner in this critical effort and I look forward to continuing our productive relationship on behalf of America’s college students.”
According to their website, NAICU “serves as the unified national voice of independent higher education…with nearly 1,000 members nationwide, NAICU reflects the diversity of private, nonprofit higher education in the United States. Members include traditional liberal arts colleges, major research universities, church- and faith-related institutions, historically black colleges and universities, women's colleges, performing and visual arts institutions, two-year colleges, and schools of law, medicine, engineering, business, and other professions.”
NAICU member institutions in Nassau and Suffolk Counties include: Adelphi University, Garden City; Dowling College, Oakdale; Hofstra University, Hempstead; Long Island University, Brookville; Molloy College, Rockville Centre; and the Rabbinical College of Long Island, Long Beach.
