Incident: Marine Bureau and Aviation Section Officers Rescue Distressed Kayaker
Location: Old Inlet, Fire Island
Date/Time: Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 8:32 p.m.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau and Aviation Section officers last night rescued a kayaker who was hanging onto a pylon at the Old Inlet in Fire Island.
Timothy Miller was kayaking at Old Inlet when he flipped his kayak and lost his paddle. He swam to a small island and after resting briefly, he decided to swim to shore. However, the current was too strong and Miller called 911 with his cell phone at 8:08 p.m. and held onto a pylon while awaiting help.
Marine Bureau Officers Michael Axelson, Frank Sierra and Brendan Grogan of Marine Mike responded, as did a second Marine Bureau boat. A Suffolk County helicopter guided the boats because of the shallow water.
At 8:32 p.m. the officers pulled Miller onto Marine Mike. He was very cold and was exhausted. Miller, 39, of 315 E. Main St., Patchogue, was transported by South Country Ambulance to a local hospital.
