A Queens man drowned in Noyack Saturday.

Tyreef Benston, 26, visiting the East End on a day trip with friends, was swimming in Trout Pond when he began to struggle and went under water, according to police.

Southampton Town police officers and bay constable along with dive teams from Sag Harbor and North Sea fire departments, searched the water. The Sag Harbor Village Volunteer Ambulance also responded to the scene.

Sag Harbor dive team members located Benston’s body approximately 17 feet from the boardwalk in an area of the pond with an approximate depth of 11 feet, according to a Southampton Police news release. The Southampton Town police dive and recovery unit recovered the body, which was turned over to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.

The pond, a seven-acre freshwater lake, is located in a 35-acre town park and is not a designated swimming area. It is not protected by lifeguards and “swimming is not recommended due to irregular water depths and hazardous bottom conditions,” according to a Southampton Town recreation department brochure.

The Southampton Town Police ask that anyone with information about this incident or on any criminal activity call the Southampton Town Police at 631-728-5000, the Southampton Town Detective Unit at 631-702-2230, or the Crime Hotline at 631-728-3454. All calls will be kept confidential.
