2014 0412 horseradish festival

Throngs of people flocked to Hallockville Museum Farm today for the First Annual North Fork Horseradish Festival.

The  “celebration of all things horseradish” featured recipe contests and cooking demos, lots of activities and competitions.

The idea for the festival grew out of a local springtime tradition of friends and neighbors gathering on th Wednesday before Easter to peel, grind, mash and prepare horseradish — an annual rite that grew into a party so big, it had to be moved from a family backyard to a vineyard. See story and video. Last year, organizers of the informal affair announced the 42-year tradition would come to an end. See blog.
