The Riverhead Blue Waves began the 2013 season the way they ended 2012: with a rout over the North Babylon Bulldogs.
Led by quarterback Cody Smith, who had two touchdown passes and ran one in himself, the Waves beat the Bulldogs 35-6 Thursday afternoon at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field in Riverhead.
“The guys just stepped up,” Waves head coach Leif Shay said after the game. He was pleased with what he saw on the home field. Sophomore running back Ryun Moore is “powerful and compact,” Shay said. “He’s a young kid, he doesn’t even know what he’s doing yet — it’s scary,” he said.
Riverhead had a turnover on the first play of the game, but the defense took over and prevented the Bulldogs from scoring. The Waves controlled the ball to cruise to victory, holding North Babylon scoreless until the fourth quarter.
With the second string in, the Waves scored one more time on a nine-yard touchdown pass by 11th grade quarterback Kenneth Simco. The extra point was good to take the Waves to a 35-6
victory over North Babylon.
