PBMC Health in Riverhead has announced it is implementing “a limited number of expense reductions” which it says is necessary in response to changes in certain patient volumes.

The volume changes are “likely attributable to the implementation of elements of the Affordable Care Act, the extreme winter, and insurance changes across the region,” PBMC Health said in a press release issued this afternoon.

Most of the expense savings will result from staff attrition and reduction in part-time hours, the health network said.

There are 40 open positions that won’t be filled until patient volume comes back up and about 12 positions will be eliminated, according to a PBMC Health spokesman.

The reductions are “consistent with other hospitals across the region,” PBMC Health said in the press release.

“For the period of January to February 2014, Long Island hospitals saw a decline of nearly 3,600 admissions. The East End experienced a similar decrease,” according to the release. “At the same time, PBMC Health saw significant increases in certain new services, including its Urgent Care Center on the Feil Campus in Manorville.”

“Clearly, there is a shift from inpatient care to outpatient services in certain instances,” said Demetrios Kadenas, vice president of external affairs.
