MTA chairman Jay Walder, board member Mitch Pally, LIRR president Helena Williams and other representatives of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority got an earful from East End residents at the Riverhead County Center last night, at a hearing on proposed LIRR service reductions, including the elimination of all but weekend summer service on the main line east of Ronkonkoma.

More than 150 people turned out for the hearing, which lasted more than two hours.

The MTA board is expected to take action on the proposed changes March 24. The service reductions are part of an effort to close the agency's growing $400 million budget gap.

The proposed cuts follow a bailout package last spring that included a new payroll tax imposed on businesses throughout the MTA service area.
