The U.S. Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1787 at the final meeting of the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia, Pa. The document established the government of the United States of America delegating its powers to three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. 

The original document is on display at the National Archives museum in Washington D.C. 

The Constitution begins with this famous preamble: 

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
