Riverhead school district's science director, Dr. Lois Etzel, has been named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, the school district announced today. The Board of Education made the appointment at its organizational meeting earlier this month.
The assistant superintendent post had been held by Nancy Carney, who was elevated to the position of district superintendent following the announcement in May of the resignation of superintendent Dr. Diane B. Scricca.
Etzel was hired by the Riverhead school district as K-12 science director July 1, 2008. She is a veteran educator with 28 years of experience whose career includes serving as a high school principal, assistant principal, science department chairperson and science teacher. Etzel holds a PhD. in science education from Curtin University of Technolog in Perth, Australia, as well as master's and bachelor's degrees in science from Stony Brook University.
