Nearly five inches of rain fell in Riverhead during the past 24 hours, according to preliminary data collected by the National Weather Service in Upton.

The rain caused minor flooding of flood-prone local roadways. Sections of Middle Road in Riverhead were left under water by last night’s deluge and Riverhead highway crews are out this morning pumping water off the road in trouble spots, Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson said. Middle Road west of Doctor’s Path in Riverhead, as well as in the vicinity of Deep Hole Road in Calverton experienced flooding; so did Kroemer Avenue, Woodson said. Police notified him of the issues at 1 a.m. and he went out with a crew to set up barrels, Woodson said. Heidi Behr Way along the Peconic Riverfront downtown was also under water, especially after last night’s high tide around midnight.

Rain totals on the East End were higher than on western Long Island, with 4.79 inches of rain recorded in Baiting Hollow, 4.4 inches in Westhampton Beach and 3.86 inches in Montauk. The Central Park weather station recorded 2.01 inches of rain, with 1.97 inches recorded at LaGuardia Airport during the last 24 hours.

A more detailed precipitation summary will be available later this morning, NWS meteorologist John Murray said.

Occasional rain will continue throughout the day today, with more rain likely tonight, according to the weather service. Daytime temperatures will peak at about 50 and lows tonight will drop to the mid-30s, according to the NWS forecast. More rain is in the forecast for Monday, mainly in the morning. The forecast calls for dry weather after that, at least through Thursday night.
