Voters yesterday approved the proposed operating budgets for both public libraries in the Riverhead Central School District.

The Riverhead Free Library’s $3.5 million operating budget was approved by a vote of 172 to 87. Baiting Hollow Library’s budget was approved 161 to 98. The tallies include 100 absentee ballots.

This year’s turnout of 259 voters was slightly higher than last year’s turnout of 243 voters.

Riverhead Free Library’s new director Joy Rankin, who started in that post in August, said she was very excited and pleased by the vote.

“I can’t begin to thank the community for its support,” Rankin said.

Editor’s note– This story has been revised to reflect the following correction: The library director’s given name was incorrectly stated as Joyce, not Joy.
