Riverhead’s wildlife management committee will again conduct a lottery for deer hunting on town-owned property in Calverton and Baiting Hollow during January’s special shotgun hunting season.

The lottery, open to Riverhead Town residents and property owners only, will be held on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.a t Riverhead Town Hall, 200 Howell Avenue, Riverhead. Interested hunters must be present to participate in the lottery.

A valid ID and hunting license are required.

Town-owned land is not the only opportunity for shotgun hunting during next month’s special deer season.

Any owner or lease-holder of 10 acres or more in the towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southampton, Southold, Shelter Island and East Hampton can consent to hunting on his or her property during the special deer season. There is a limit of one hunter per 10 acres.

To participate in the hunt on land in any of the towns, hunters must have:
a valid New York State big game hunting license;
a valid big game tag;
a signed landowner’s endorsement
a town permit.

To obtain a town permit to hunt on any land, a hunter must present his or her big game hunting license, big game tag, signed landowner’s endorsement and town permit application to the town clerk.

The January firearms deer season runs from Jan. 6 through Jan. 31 this year — weekdays only. Hunting Hours are from sunrise to sunset.

Hunters may use a shotgun, using a single ball or slug, or a muzzleloading rifle, shooting a single projectile, having a minimum bore of 0.44 inches. Shotgun barrels may be rifled, and telescopic sights may be used. No muzzleloading pistols are permitted. As of December 31, 2012, crossbows are no longer legal in New York State. Crossbows may not be used during the special firearms season in January.

The regular deer season on Long Island, for bow-hunting only, began Oct. 1 and continues through Dec. 31.
