The new health club on Main Street won’t be opening this month as its owners had hoped, but work on the 25,000-square-foot fitness center continues with an eye on a May opening.

“We anticipate opening shortly, but we don’t have an exact date right now,” Maximus Health and Fitness Center manager Gary Cotugno said today.

On Saturday, the gym vacated its temporary quarters in the former Blockbuster video store on Route 58, where it had operated since last April when it moved out of its longtime space in the shopping center behind the video store.

This weekend’s move sparked rumors that the company would not be opening downtown.

Not true at all, Cotugno said today. The equipment has been moved into the new space and additional new equipment has been delivered there as well. The former Blockbuster site was always intended to be a temporary location until the downtown health club was finished, Cotugno said.
