Allan A. Borghard of Calverton, NY passed away on November 15, 2011 at the age of 82. He worked full time as a teacher in the Levittown Free School District from 1964-1988 and then continued for 17 more years as a part time personal computer technician with the Levittown School. He was best known as the inspiration and man behind creating numerous Rowing teams throughout Long Island and just wanted to introduce High School students to the love of the sport.
Allan was born in 1929 to William & Edna Rose Karl Borghard in Yonkers, NY. He started Rowing in 1945 in New Rochelle, NY and joined the New Rochelle Rowing Club which won the Nationals in 1947. Mr. Allan attended college at Rutgers University and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1951 and during his college years he began his life as an avid Rower. During his freshman year of college his Freshman Crew was undefeated during regular season. Then as a sophomore he rowed on Junior Varsity but an injury prevented him from continuing Rowing in college. During his senior year of College he coached the Men’s Lightweight.
After graduation he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Berlin. He became active again as a rower with the Berliner Rudder Club. After his military term he went on to work for Sperry’s as an engineer and there he met his wife in 1954. They married in 1956. He started coaching at the State University, now known as Stony Brook University and also coached at CW Post College. He started many Rowing programs throughout Long Island and started the Rowing team at McArthur High School in Levittown where he coached the team in 1978 to the Scholastic National Championship. He coached at other various high schools including St. Anthony’s, Friends Academy, Chaminade High School and Huntington High School.
Other coaching highlights include his Huntington athlete rower, Bob Kaehler whom he coached to the Olympic Games and won 3 World Championships. He also taught his nephew Dave Collins whom won the Olympic Bronze Medal in 1996 in the Lighthouse Four - . He was honored by many and was especially proud of his affiliation with Cold Spring Harbor in which named there Boathouse after Allan.
Mr. Borghard is survived by his wife Joyce and four children; Catherine Jaworowski, Elizabeth Reilly, William Borghard and Max Borghard. In addition he is also survived by sister Elaine Hastall and he was a proud grandfather of seven grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 16 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Alexander Tuthill Funeral Home, 6447 Route 25A, Wading River.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 26 at 12 noon at North Shore United Methodist Church, 260 Route 25A, Wading River.
