Charles B. Gardner, Jr. of Mattituck died on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the age of 88.
He was born in New York City on January 25, 1924 to Charles G. Gardner, Sr. and Elizabeth Anne Gardner. From 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945, he served in the United States Army. Then in 1946, he married the former Mildred Abouaf at St. Luke’s Church in the Bronx.
Mr. Gardner retired as a Battalion Chief with the FDNY after thirty years of service and was a member of UFOA. For the past thirty years, he has lived in Mattituck and was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church
Surviving is his wife, Mildred; three children: Sherryl Gardner Thompson of Sarasota, Florida, Christine Gardner Raftery of Floral Park and C. Richard Gardner of Garden City; three sisters, Winifred Drankwater of D.C., Betty Anne Ferrelle of D.C. and Marguerite McCormick of New York City and five grandchildren: Kevin Gardner Thompson of Sarasota, Florida, Meagen Elizabeth Raftery of Commack, NY, Christopher James Gardner of Washington, D.C., Carolyn Gardner of Garden City and Gregory Gardner of Garden City and great-grandsons: Ryan Charles Fenn and “Baby Boy” Fenn.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, June 23rd at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church by Father George Michell. Interment was in Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
