This year’s Suffolk Latin Certamen, the academic competition that pits the Island’s top Latin students in a brain-powered contest of grammar, syntax, history, mythology – and cultural literacy – drew the biggest field of participants in the event’s history. Representing 12 districts spanning the Island, 60 teams of middle and high school foursomes battled it out on Tuesday, April 8, at SUNY Stony Brook.

Across the board, the Riverhead Blue Wave Latinists (Caeruleae Undae Latinantes) distinguished themselves with their traditional excellent results, walking away with fully half the honors. Out of 12 total prizes awarded over four levels of study, Riverhead Latin students took 6!  At the Middle School Level I, Riverhead took 1st and 3rd places; High School Level II took 2nd place; Level III took 2nd place; the Advanced Level teams won both 2nd and 3rd places!

RCSD teachers Magistra Laurentia Calpurnia Custer and Doc Greenberger are mighty proud of all the kids who participated in the annual Certamen – and thanks go out to the RCSD community for the perennial support of the Riverhead Latin program – year after year, and down through the generations, it has been one of the “winningest” on Long Island!
