Riverhead High School lacrosse alumni and Diggers Ales and Eats are hosting an event Thursday, February 26 (6-8 p.m.) to benefit the Lawrence family in the aftermath of the murder of mother and daughter Tanya and Danielle Lawrence in Wading River Sunday.

Riverhead physical education teacher Tony Lawrence, father and ex-husband of the victims, started the lacrosse program in Riverhead and coached the varsity lacrosse team for eight seasons, until 2010.

Thursday’s event is being organized by former team manager Kelsey Stark, who will be the guest bartender at Digger’s for the evening. Diggers is donating snacks and Stark will be collecting tips and donations to benefit the Lawrence Family support fund.

To help with funeral costs, Rivehead lacrosse alumnus Kevin Tuthill started an online fundraising effort on the GoFundme website on Feb. that has since collected more than $26,000 in donations.

“It’s amazing to see the outpouring of support for Tony and the rest of the Lawrence family and we want to keep that love going,” Stark said.

The former coach is much loved by his lacrosse alumni. “Anyone who has had the pleasure of being coached by him knows the love and support he would give to anyone who needed him,” Tuthill wrote on the fundraising website.

“We invite all to come on down, have a drink, share a story, and let’s continue to show what a great community Riverhead is,” Stark said.
