Pat Thomas missed most of the season last year because of a vertebrae injury. His doctors would not let him work out. He was able to ride a bike in the workout room a couple miles, but that was it.

Thomas, a senior this year, is now at the top of his weight class.

At Wednesday’s tournament at Patchogue-Medford, Thomas defeated his first two opponents with pins. His next two matches were more difficult, but he also prevailed, beating Ken Meinsen (John Glenn), who is currently ranked 3rd in the county at 135 and Sam Schwartzapfel (Rocky Point) who is currently ranked 3rd at 130.

“A lot can happen in six minutes, ” said Riverhead wrestling coach Wade Davey. “You just never know.”

Thomas, the recipient of the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award Wednesday, says he’s really excited about this season.

“It’s going great so far,”  said Thomas, who says he’s got his sights set on a county championship.

He placed first in his weight class (135) at the tournament. Teammate Gabe Rice also placed first at 140.
